pH is the measure of hydrogen ion activity. In terms of aquariums and fish keeping it is an indicator of how acidic or basic your water is. The pH scale ranges from 1 to 14. Values below 7 are considered acidic. Values above 7 are categorized as basic. A pH measurement of 7 is considered neutral.
Keeping pH within range and stable helps reduce stress among fish, helping them resist disease.
There are a number of ways to measure pH. In our experience they vary in accuracy but when measured consistently over time they are very good reference points.
Digital meters are an accurate and easy way to regularly test your aquarium water. In recent years they have come down in price and are now quite affordable. Check out your local fish store or our Amazon Affiliate Link for a sample of meters available.
Water test strips are the most simplistic option but are arguably less accurate. Take a strip from the tube, dip it in the water, wait a few seconds and compare colors. Checkout the following two companies to learn more.
Water test kits are arguable the most accurate and a must-have for any aquarium enthusiast. They will allow you to test pH in both high and low ranges. Master kits also come with the ability to test Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate. We recommend the API Freshwater Master Test Kit
